Mahamaya Model United Nations 2024
The 14th of September, 18 delegates were seated at the opening ceremony of the second session of Mahamaya Model United Nations. This was the biggest delegation CISKMUN had ever sent to a conference, and delegates were spread throughout all five committees, discussing various engaging topics and solutions:
● The General Assembly 1 (GA1) addressed the impact of the Yemen Crisis on international stability, emphasising on disarmament and arms regulation
● The World Health Association (WHA) focused on the need for robust strategies to limit pathogen gene pools and reconstruction of regional medical structures
● The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) evaluated how new regulations in Formula 1 impacted teams and image of the sport
● United Nations Women (UNW) addressed the issue of gender based violence and femicide through integrated frameworks
● The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) analysed how to use big data to enhance economic and monetary policies for achieving financial inclusion.
Organized by the Model UN club of Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy, the conference saw wide participation from schools across the region. Schools like Trinity College, Gateway College, Dharmaraja College, and Museaus College attended, promoting a platform for intellectual engagement and inter-school camaraderie. With this kind of diversity, multiple points of view were brought forward into the committee sessions, enriching the debate and allowing younger delegates to learn or adapt debating styles and techniques from more experienced delegates.
Three delegates managed to dominate debate in their committees and showcased great argumentative skill, enough to bring home awards and make us proud. Our president, Haani Hilmy, performed exceptionally in GA1 earning her the Best Delegate Award in the committee, while Pasan Karunaratne and Aurelian Fernando received Honorary Mentions in ECOSOC and UNW, respectively. It must be noted that these two delegates were both first time award winners, indicating the progress made by the club since the time it started. The conference marked a significant point in CISKMUN, as it set a new club record for the highest number of awards at one event, as of 2024.
